About KLDC
Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC) is a State Corporation established by the Government of Kenya under the Kenya Leather Development Council Order, 2011 (Legal Notice No. 114 of 9th September, 2011), under the State Corporations Act (Cap.446), Laws of Kenya. The Council was instituted as a Specialized agency to drive the Government’s agenda on the development leather industry. To achieve this, the Council is expected to regulate and facilitate the growth of the industry.
Mandate of the Council
The principle mandate of KLDC is to drive the transformation of the leather value chain in the Country from a raw material/semi-processed export-driven sector to a finished leather product manufacturing industry. KLDC is therefore a key driver of the “Big Four” Agenda under the Manufacturing pillar.
Our Role In National Development
The Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC) plans to spark industrial revolution by undertaking policy reforms and implementing targeted programmes and activities in the Leather sector. The Country is implementing the Vision 2030 and the Big Four Agenda that seeks to transform Kenya into a newly industrialized economy at upper middle-income economy. Towards this, Kenya seeks to grow her exports by 25% to enable Manufacturing sector grow to 15% share of gross domestic product. Kenya is implementing the Big Four agenda and thus the role of Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC) is to promote Kenya Leather Exports globally, contributing to the increase in exports by 25% annually as per the National Exports Development and Promotion Strategy.
Functions of the Council
The Council’s mandate is executed through the carrying out of the following functions as provided by the establishing legal instrument:
To provide advisory services to the Cabinet Secretary on matters relating to processing of and trade in hides, skins, leather and leather goods for planning purposes;
To promote, direct, coordinate and harmonize all activities in the leather subsector;
To guide the implementation of the Board’s policies and strategies;
To undertake research and development activities;
To oversee licensing in the leather sub-sector;
To collect, store, analyze and disseminate data on leather sub-sector;
